A NEW VIEW OF THE LAW (verses 1-12)

Each study will have an error in one of the questions. It is our duty as believers to test everything that we read or hear with the Bible. So this will be a mini exercise in testing what is being said in class.

Q1) What example did Paul use to describe how one is bound to the law as long as one lives; whom was he specifically talking to and why?

Discussion)    Paul used the example of marriage and he was talking to the Jewish people.  He did this because all Jews knew what the boundaries were for a marriage and so he describes going from the law to gospel of Jesus Christ as in the confines of marriage.

Q2) According to verse 4 how are we dead to the law?

Discussion)    We are dead to the law in that we are no longer ruled by the law but we are ruled by Jesus Christ and essentially married to Jesus in that through Him is the only way to get to God.

Q3) What is one thing that a lot of Christians get mixed up about the law? (Study verses 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 12 for help).

Discussion)    The one thing is that many believe that the law is dead or has been destroyed.  This is false since Jesus said that He came not to destroy the law but to fulfill it.

Q4) In verse 7, Paul is saying that the sin of covetousness/lust was thrown out of the law because it made the law sinful? How did it make the law sinful?

Clues)    This is the trick question.

Discussion)    No, instead he uses covetousness as an example of how we still need the law.  We are not under it but instead it gives the believer the ability to see what God considers right and what God considers wrong.

Q5) What do verses 9-11 mean?

Discussion)    At first look these verses may make it seem that the law is no good.  Instead it is a lead in to the next question.  It shows that the law is first to help those without Jesus realize not only in their heads but in their hearts that they need a Savior and that they are sinning.  For those that have Jesus as their Savior the law is to further understand what Truth is and what is right and wrong.  The law is holy and points back to Jesus Christ.

Q6) According to I Timothy 1:8-10, who is the law used for and why?

Discussion)    Answered in the above question.

LIFE APPLICATION: Why do you think God did give us certain commandments to live by?

Discussion)    So we can start to understand who He is and what is in His heart.
